Historical context

For centuries Constantinople stood as the capital of the Byzantine Empire and resisted repeated attacks. Its walls and location made it one of the most important cities in the medieval world.

In 1453 Sultan Mehmed II and the Ottoman army captured the city. The event changed the political and cultural balance of the region and is an important turning point when studying the history of the Islamic world and Europe.

The subject should be studied through multiple historical sources and perspectives.
